Small, but deadly, Juneau’s Gastineau Channel Little League Minors Division All Stars are ready to play their final tournament of the season.
The 9-to-10-year-olds will travel to Sitka for the District Tournament beginning Thursday, July 10. The Minors division has no state or regional play so the districts are the last opportunity for stolen bases, home runs and big plays in the field and hot dogs off the field.
The GCLL Minors are catcher Porter Nelson (number 20), second baseman Matthew Johns (1), center fielder and baseman Finn Kesey (8), first baseman Kai Hargrave (14), catcher Gavin Millard (17), first baseman Dylan Murdoch (10), pitcher Kaden Eppers (2), short stop Joseph Aline (18), pitcher Isaiah Nelson (9), center fielder Gaby Soto (39), third baseman Oliver Mendoza (7), right fielder Alex Filkoy (3), left fielder Carter Walker (15), coaches Jayme Johns and Phil Millard and manager Gilbert Mendoza.
“I think our pitching looks really good,” Mendoza said. “I am excited about that. And we have been hitting the ball well so we have been hitting the ball in play and advancing the runners. If our pitching holds up we should do well.”
Mendoza stated that the team has identified at least seven players who can pitch.
“We have a handful of pitchers that look pretty good,” Mendoza said. “And we are stroking the ball well. The kids are having a lot of fun and enjoying themselves. I know the coaches are.”
Juneau plays Ketchikan at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sitka plays Ketchikan at 6 p.m. Friday, Juneau plays Sitka at 6 p.m. Saturday, and the teams with the two best records play Sunday at noon.
All evening games will be under the lights of Moller Field.
Juneau’s GCLL Majors Softball team will host the State Championships from July 10 through 15 at Melvin Park Field, the GCLL Majors Baseball team will host Districts from July 12 through 19 at Miller Field, and the GCLL Juniors Softball team will host Districts from July 13 through 19 and State from July 21 through 26 at Melvin Park Field.
