The Gastineau Channel Little League Juniors Division baseball All-Star team will travel to Ketchikan for the district tournament July 13-18.
“We will be fighting for everything we get,” GCLL Juniors manager Joe Tompkins said. “There are no gimmes in Southeast. Ketchikan and Sitka both had really good teams last year, so I am expecting the same. These boys here understand that they will be fighting for everything they have.”
According to Tompkins, the Gastineau Juniors, ages 13-14, can play all positions and will not be assigned starting spots until the day before the first game.
Players include Michael Cesar (10), Donavan McCurley (7), Jacob Dale (black 14, red 15), Bryce Swofford (23), Sammy McKnight (9), Owen Mendoza (black 8, red 3), Kasey Watts (black 12, red 16), Corbin Neville (black 33, red 2), Garrett Johns (black 11, red 6), Riley Griffen (13), Bobby Cox (20), Luke Malinger (5) and Bryan Miramontes (44). Aiding Tompkins are coaches Dave Cesar, Jayme Johns and Ty Griffen.
“The strength of the team is that we have some pretty good pitching and some pretty good fielding,” Tompkins said. “But again, we will be scratching for everything we get.”
Last year, the Juniors won the District Tournament at Sitka, defeating Ketchikan in the best of three series 19-6 and 8-2 for the title. The Juniors then lost to Anchorage’s Abbott-O-Rabbit for the state championship, dropping the best of five series in three games 6-3, 7-0 and 10-1.
