Angoon’s Levi Johnson and Kake’s Archie Dundas matched shots in a C Bracket elimination game during the Juneau Lions Club 69th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.
Johnson scored a game-high 23 points, including 15 in the second half, and Dundas had 20 — 13 in the second stanza.
Angoon led 38-25 at the half and was not seriously challenged in the final 20 minutes, opening a 50-31 advantage at the 15:57 mark on a Johnson jumper.
Dundas answered with two free throws and teammate Brandon Jackson hit back-to-back shots to pull Kake within 12 points, 52-38, with 11:59 remaining.
Kake came to within 11 points, 64-53, on a Jesse Ross jumper that was answered by Angoon’s Kevin Mitchell, and within 11 again at 67-56 on a Dundas drive but was answered by a 7-0 Angoon run.
After a basket by Kake’s Pat Cook and two Brandon Jackson free throws, Angoon closed out its scoring on a 16-0 streak. Dundas finished his Gold Medal tourney with a deep three-pointer to end the scoring.
Stan Johnson added 14 points for Angoon, Jeremy Martin and Guy Hunter 12 apiece, Frank Lane, Mitchell and Kyle Johnson six each, Todd Arujo five, Albert Kookesh four and Travis See two.
B. Jackson added 16 points for Kake, Brad Williams 10, Cook eight, Ross four, Rich Austin three and Paul Demmert two.
Angoon had 26 field goals, nine more from deep, and hit 11-15 from the charity stripe; Kake had 17 field goals, seven more from deep, and went 8-14 at the line.
Angoon moves on to play Hoonah in an elimination game at 6 p.m. today.
