Fort Greely official suspended over investigation

FAIRBANKS — The U.S. Army this week suspended the missile defense commander at Fort Greely over his handling of reported sexual misconduct at the base in Alaska.

Lt. Col. Joseph Miley’s command of the Fort Greely-based 49th Missile Defense Battalion was suspended Tuesday, said Army spokesman Marco Morales at the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense headquarters in Huntsville, Ala. Morales told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner ( ) that Miley lost his command because of preliminary findings of a sexual misconduct investigation that started in January.

Bloomberg News had reported that Miley was under investigation for not doing enough to crack down on extramarital affairs on the post.

Morales said Lt. Gen. Richard Formica, commanding general of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, determined some of the findings of the investigation “pointed to the fact that he lost confidence in Col. Miley’s ability to be the commander.”

The spokesman declined to provide specifics of what constitutes sexual misconduct, since the findings are still being reviewed. He told the News-Miner Wednesday the findings do not accuse Miley himself of any sexual misconduct.

“It was more a leadership issue than anything else,” Morales said.

The 49th Missile Defense Battalion operates 26 ground-based, midcourse airborne missile interceptors at Fort Greely.
