State flags will be lowered to half-staff Friday to honor a former chief justice of the Alaska Supreme Court, Gov. Sean Parnell’s office announced today.

Robert Boochever died in October, and a memorial service is scheduled for him in Pasadena, Calif. on Friday, a release from the Office of the Governor states.

In addition to his service on Alaska’s highest court, Boochever also sat on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the first Alaskan to do so.

“Justice Boochever was a trail-blazing Alaskan, having been the first jurist from our state to serve on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals,” Parnell stated in a release. “(First lady) Sandy (Parnell) and I send our condolences to his family and friends as they meet to remember him.”
