JUNEAU — The vice-chair of the House State Affairs Committee is holding up a resolution celebrating the Girl Scouts to investigate information “floating around the Internet” about a connection between the group and Planned Parenthood.
Rep. Wes Keller asked the resolution’s sponsor if there’s a connection. Sen. Bettye Davis said she wasn’t familiar with that.
Keller said he wasn’t moving SCR17, in part, to investigate the claims, prompting a fiery response from Davis. She said she saw no connection between what Keller was asking and the resolution marking the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts and making 2012 “Year of the Girl.”

I nominate Wes Keller for 'State Invertabrate'.
Rep. Keller was exactly right
Rep. Keller was exactly right to question the Girl Scouts allegiance with Planned Parenthood.
I had no trouble finding facts about this on the internet. It's always disturbing when organizations are exposed (like Susan G. Komen) and the progressives come out swinging with attacks and vitriole towards anyone that believes differently than they.
Why all the nastiness when one would think that if you believe in something (like Planned Parenthood) you would be proud to say 'heLL yeah, they're aligned'?
It makes me sad and scared for the future of America.
Here are some quotes I found to back-up the Rep.'s question -
"Some former Girl Scouts have parted ways with the organization because of brochures like one labeled, "How to Know You Are Ready for Sex." It's a Planned Parenthood brochure with the Girl Scout logo on the back. Others are appalled that Girl Scouts of the USA is a member organization of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), which publicly advocates for abortion, contraceptives, sexual diversity, and "comprehensive" sexual education."

"Girl Scouts USA often makes the point that they are just one of many member organizations; they don’t like to admit that Girl Scouts USA is the single largest national component of WAGGGS, making up over a third of its 10 million members."
And from World Net Daily -
"When many parents think of Girl Scouts, they imagine young girls in uniform selling Thin Mints and Tagalong cookies – not learning about stone labyrinths, world peace, global warming, yoga, avatars, smudging incense, Zen gardens and feminist, communist and lesbian role models.
But that’s exactly what many of 2.7 million Girl Scouts will learn about with a new curriculum called “Journeys” released last year (2008 and still used today)."
@Calypso
Seriously? Your source is World Net Daily, who said the 9/11 attacks were from God raising up Islam because of America's moral corruption. American Thinker who spouts the same nonsense that the Indiana lawmaker did, that started the whole thing based on no facts whatsoever. You really need to expand your reading repertoire. Facts you say? I guess in your mind its a fact if WND and American Thinker tells you it is.
Leave it to Wes Keller
to grandstand on the Girl Scouts---And pretty funny that he was willing to go there, extending a new front in the culture war, while admitting he'd done no real research; kicking sand in the faces of little girls selling cookies and an organization that is probably not nearly partisan enough in his eyes...
The "best and the brightest," huh? All I can say is that the Girl Scouts acquit themselves rather better than the Alaskan State House of Representatives
@jamison - but we as adults
@jamison - but we as adults are entrusted to have the best interest of "the little girls selling cookies" in mind. Did you even bother to look through the Journeys program material that the GSA uses to teach the children? It's very agenda driven (but what's new?).
@kiki - my sources are perfectly fine. Just because you don't happen to like their stance doesn't make them wrong or incorrect.
I'll ask again. Why all the personal attacks? Planned Parenthood's involvement should be high-fived. No need to get all defensive.
@Calypso
The problem I have is with people like you that try to tear down Girl Scouts simply because you believe and agree with a bunch of hooey out on the "internets" by some radical right wing religious blogs. You should be ashamed of yourself. I have no problem with Planned Parenthood, which has nothing to do with the Girl Scouts. I do see in your sources, attempts to get girls to move over to Christian groups. If you dont like Girl Scouts, dont send your kid there. But yet because you have this paranoia that somehow Planned Parenthood is connected, you want to tear apart this group. You are destructive. SHAME. The difference between you and me is if someone wants to form a Christian group for girls I say fine, go for it, I have the right to choose to send my daughter there or not. But if you dont agree with what Girl Scouts teach (based on lies you read to begin with) you band together with a bunch of right wing bullies and try to disgrace and ruin the Girl Scouts rather than just not send your daughter there.

@Calypso
@Calyspo says "but we as adults are entrusted to have the best interest of "the little girls selling cookies" in mind."
Oh and by the way, its not up to YOU to teach my daughter anything nor is it up to you to decide what groups have a right to exist. You seem to think you need to involve yourself in everyone else's life. My suggestion to you is to mind your own business, worry about your own kids and leave mine alone.
For anyone that wants to support the Girl Scouts and doesnt believe the cookies are made by the devil himself like Calypso thinks, their new lemon cookies are pretty darn good. I know I will be buying extra to show support after all the demeaning and trashing that has been directed at them.
There you go - liberal
There you go - liberal "tolerance" on full display. Atleast they don't mince words!!
Darn rights
Calypso, and proud of it. You and your "friends" are trying to get rid of Girl Scouts. Im not trying to get rid of your groups. Thats the meaning of tolerance.
Actually I could care less if
Actually I could care less if the Girl Scouts exist. I just want people to know exactly where they stand on the issues.
Say it loud and say it proud...don't hide. And when you're exposed stand up for what you're "preaching".
@kiki - I've not read one post where you actually defend what the Girl Scouts are teaching our girls (that is if you know. Have you even looked at the Journeys literature?). All you do is use personal attacks and rage against "radical right wing religious blogs".
Who's the bully here?
@Calypso
I think being a Girl Scout when I was younger qualifies me to know a little about what we did. Lets see, I remember camping for the first time, making bracelets, doing fundraisers, volunteering. You know, those kind of heathen activities that you need to watch out for. Ive read some about the Journeys program. It says they try to teach them awful stuff such as lead with courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place. The nerve of them even considering teaching those values. But I know, you with the conspiracy theory issues, has probably come up with another idea of what leading with courage, confidence and character really means.
I think Ive been pretty clear on where I stand on this subject as well as many others including the war on women. This is no different, just younger females being attacked. Just last week Gov Walker of Wisconsin repealed their Equal Pay law, just one more attack against women. But a recent poll shows 60% of women under the age of 50 support Pres Obama so your attacks against women are backfiring.
@ Calypso... Power and Control is a form of abuse
And trashing a good org like the girl scouts is about control in order to force others to your values. What makes you so right?
Stop feeding...
The Frenchie troll.
@58 - you stayed up late just
@58 - you stayed up late just to write that!!
@Calypso...
Here is the GSA list of Journeys brochures...
http://www.girlscouts.org/program/journeys/
Certainly very troubling...that anyone could think they are dangerous.
Also Calypso...you do know that "Calypso" is the name of a NYMPH from GREEK MYTHOLOGY. Oh my goodness me! You are idolizing GREEK PAGANISM!
@elboor - but did you open
@elboor - but did you open the Journey books and page through them? Thought not.
From the Journeys Book: 'Your Voice Your World: The Power of Advocacy'. These are some of the women who are presented as "Voices For Good", Advocacy Role Models for girls to emulate - Betty Frieden (founder of the National Abortion Rights Action League, or NARAL, active in Marxist circles, spoke in favor of same sex lifestyle), Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (chairwoman of the American Communist Party), Rigoberta Menchu (Guatemalan activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner who joined Marxist guerrilla movement), Adrienne Germain (President of the International Womens Health Coalition. This group is among the most aggressive promoters of a right to abortion at the United Nations and around the world. In her bio, Germain boasts being honored as a Girl Scout Woman of Distinction) and there are lots more if you care to look.
In 2010, the Girl Scouts of the USA published a book called “MEdia. The girls were invited to visit the progressive, Soros funded website Media Matters "to clear up media misinformation".
From the Journeys series Amaze - Movie watching activity: GSUSA encourages young girls to watch the movie Clueless, which the USCCB rates as morally offensive for its ridicule of virginity, implied affairs and casual substance abuse by adolescents.
From Your Voice, Your World - Recommends girls go to the website: Amnesty International. USCCB recognizes Amnesty International (AI) as erroneous in the group’s support of abortion. AI also promotes Planned Parenthood and provides a live link to Planned Parenthood on the GSUSA approved website. AI has also mocked and attacked the Catholic Church.
Ways to earn an "interest patch" - This interest patch is promoted and recommended by GSUSA. Interest Patch Requirements sends girls age Kindergarten to 12thgrade to www.doloreshuerta.org/, which promotes Planned Parenthood and links girls directly to the Planned Parenthood website as well as other pro-abortion resources. (Mrs. Huerta is also promoted by Girl Scouts in the book for younger girls called Agent of Change and through the official Girl Scouts’ Delores Huerta patch) Mrs. Huerta has received Planned Parenthood’s highest honor: the Margaret Sanger award. Huerta has also received an award from the Catholic dissident group, Call to Action. She is promoted by GSUSA in printed materials as well: Your Voice Your World (page 65) and Agent of Change (page 19)
And here's the final thing I'll bother you with -
" In March 2012, GSUSA blog gives girls a live link to Marie Claire Magazine and suggests that girls buy the March issue which features new Girl Scouts CEO, Anna Maria Chavez. From the GSUSA blog, girls land on the Marie Claire homepage, which promotes Marie Claire’s graphic “Love and Sex” section, Sex Positions and Tips, and How to Have a Threesome."
@Calypso...
Did you know there are places called libraries with books in them with controversial ideas? Some from *gasp* COMMUNISTS?
Did you know you can even find the *gasp* "Communist Manifesto" in the JDHS and TMHS librairies?
Did you know there is this thing called the "internets" [sic] that has *gasp* ideas that some people might find *gasp* offensive?
You see I actually got your original point. The thing is, it is a crap point. I completely and totally disagree with you that the GS are a Satanic, Communist front organization for a Planned Parenthood takeover of the minds of American girls. I find this thinly veiled assertion, based upon the very flimsy connections you point out to be, frankly, idiotic and completely divorced from reality.
You should be ASHAMED of yourself. ASHAMED. Why? Not because I think being a smudging, world peace loving, labyrinth walking, yoga posing, *gasp* Communist, Satanist, Abortionist, is anything at all to be ashamed of. Because you are lying when you say that this is what the Girl Scouts are all about.
The dictionary defines a Lie as a “noun 1. a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood. 2. something intended or serving to convey a false impression; imposture: “His flashy car was a lie that deceived no one.” 3. an inaccurate or false statement. 4. the charge or accusation of lying: “He flung the lie back at his accusers.” Or a “verb (used without object) 5. to speak falsely or utter untruth knowingly, as with intent to deceive. 6. to express what is false; convey a false impression.”
What’s that book you cherish, the one called The Bible, have to say about lying?
@boorish - too many smart azz
@boorish - too many smart azz comments coming from you.
You've lost the argument...
@Calypso
You should be ASHAMED of yourself! ASHAMED!
Calypso is programmed to
Calypso is programmed to exhibit a range of emotions. Shame is not one of them. Anger, jealousy, reproach, and false bravado are, however.
Calypso
Not only are you woefully transparent, you are a liar.
Again, blogs leading to blogs is not "evidence".
Not one person in this whole discussion has been able to show ONE link DIRECTLY from the Girl Scouts website, or one Print Screen of some "horrifying" pamphlet.
With so much "evidence" - shocking that no one can actually print anything other than gossip and innuendo.
Which makes you a fool, for believing it, or a liar, or both.
Wow, just wow - more of that
Wow, just wow - more of that liberal tolerance on display.
Swimmer, you are woefully partisan and just because you wish something to NOT be true doesn't make it a lie.
Always the same MO with this bunch - personally attack the messenger and ignore the message.
You and your ilk are an embarrassment.
re: Wow, just wow - more of that
I completely agree with you, in that the girl scouts are spreading communist propaganda to crush the church, corrupt our young daughters, and turn them into soulless nymphs. However, you're also right in that people on the JE comment section won't tolerate our opinion because we don't present any "facts" to back it up. If they want to ignore the message and simply make personal attacks, then it's time to take the message to the streets. I'll be trying to disband my union until about 4:30, but after that we can hang a girl scout troop leader in front of Planned Parenthood. If you're up for it. Let me know....

@Calypso: a 9 year old flyer
@Calypso: a 9 year old flyer indicating Girl Scout sponsorship of a Planned Parenthood health event proves that GSA is a commie organization that's encouraging young girls to have sex?
Swimmer won't be eating her words, but I hope you enjoy the taste of your own foot.
congratulations, Calypso
One person who's found an actual document with Planned Parenthood and the Girl Scout logo (and Campfire USA, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, etc. etc.) on it.
Of course, it's from 2003. In Texas. Maybe Girl Scouts did partner with Planned Parenthood in 2003. Do they in 2012?
And, there's no Agenda. So, what was the message? How do you know the whole thing wasn't about the dangers of sex and hiv - and promoted abstenance? Answer: you don't.
Look - Here's my problem: Someone reads some article on the web saying this event happened in 2003. Someone else writes a blog and says, 'well, you know, my sister's friend's cousin said her brownie troop taught 3rd graders that touching yourself is ok' - then suddenly, some people believe that Girl Scouts is teaching animal sacrifice, black magic, and sex games to kids, and that every strong female role model they put up must be a communist or worse - oh, and that's ALL they do, by the way. It's rediculous and you know it.
Most of what has been said above about the organization today is pure conjecture, and not supported by any actual evidence. I looked through the Girl Scout website, and found nothing of the kind - did find a story highlighting a nun who's a good speaker though.
I found the list of partners for Girl Scouts in 2012 on their site - really horrible partners like NASA, Dept. of Homeland Security, Mitsubishi Corporation, etc. etc. etc.
Looked on WAGGGS too - didn't find Planned Parenthood there either.
http://www.girlscouts.org/who_we_are/our_partners/corporations_foundations/
http://www.wagggsworld.org/en/support_us/Oursupporters
Look - if Planned Parenthood potentially partnering with Girl Scouts is an issue for you, then don't send your child, or ask that question, and find some current proof. Send a letter to the organization, start a campaign to sever the partnership (which I suspect has already happened) and/or look very carefully at the materials before you give them to your child. What I don't understand is this need by the right to try and destroy the entire organization, regardless of the 99.99% of good it might be doing, based on some possibly imagined 6 degrees of separation by a mostly imagined 'boogyman' that is planned parenthood.
Is Big Brother, Big Sister next? It's going to be a long list of organizations to destroy, apparently.
hmmm.....2003?
Gee, Wasn't President Bush in office then?
Hmmm....that same year, Girl Scouts were honored in Washington D.C. by representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Education.
http://www.girlscouts.org/news/stories/2003/gold_award_2003.asp
Imagine, President George W. Bush supported Planned Parenthood teaching 3rd graders to have sex! And probably communist women role models, too!
President Bush must therefore be a communist who is also an abortion supporter!
(see how that works?)
