No construction planned in 2012 for Anchorage port

Posted: May 7, 2012 - 12:01am

ANCHORAGE — Officials of the Port of Anchorage say no new construction is likely for its troubled expansion project for the third straight year.

Interim director Steve Ribuffo tells the Anchorage Daily News that engineers are continuing to study how best to move forward.

The city-owned port turned 50 last year. The municipality has been working for more than a decade to replace it.

The dock is on costly to maintain corroded piles.

Workers in 2009 began hammering steel replacement piles into place to form a new dock but the piles bent and jammed together.

The port project was scheduled for completion by 2011 but is now years behind schedule and hundreds of millions of dollars over budget.
