Empire staffers honored in regional contest

SEATTLE — Three Juneau Empire staffers were among the winners in the 2011 Society of Professional Journalists Northwest Excellence in Journalism contest.

Empire photographer Michael Penn took second place in the Feature Photography category with his photo “Brown Bag Jazz.”

Deputy Managing Editor Charles Ward took third place in the Short Feature Story category for his story “What’s in a name?”

Outdoors editor Abby Lowell took third place for page design.

The awards were announced Saturday night at banquets in Seattle and Portland, Ore. The annual contest is held by Region 10 of SPJ to honor journalism in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.
