Replacement for Anchorage municipal clerk named

ANCHORAGE — An Anchorage municipal official has been named to replace the city clerk whose oversaw the troubled municipal election.

A press release from the office of Municipal Clerk Barbara Gruenstein Wednesday says municipal ombudsman Barbara A. Jones will be appointed as Anchorage municipal clerk effective July 1.

Gruenstein submitted her resignation letter last week. She asked that the resignation take effect immediately but will stay on through June at the request of Anchorage Assembly Chairman Ernie Hall. The press release from Gruentstein’s office says the Hall made the announcement about Jones appointment.

Election workers ran out of ballots at more than half of the city’s polling places during the April election.

Gruenstein apologized for the irregularities.

The assembly fired a deputy clerk in May.
