ANCHORAGE— Poor advice from a car’s GPS unit led a man to drive off the ferry in Whittier and straight into the small boat harbor.
The Anchorage Daily News reports (http://is.gd/BK3Z4Y) the man and his two dogs were fine, but a cat inside a carrier drowned.
The unnamed man had just arrived in Alaska from the Lower 48. He drove off the ferry but after about 400 feet, the GPS unit in the man’s car told him to make a hard right turn.
Whittier public safety director Dave Schofield says that was a misdirection, and it led the man down the ramp where people launch boats.
The car was fully submerged when a man jumped in the water and broke the window open, allowing the driver and his dogs to escape.

What a doofus. Send him back to the lower 48.
Give him credit
You have to give him some credit, he made it to Alaska. It's not his fault the pesky GPS though he was driving a Duck.
Ok... I don't see any excuse
Ok... I don't see any excuse for driving into the water...gps or not. A hard right off the road, down a ramp and into the drink??? Or a hard drink? Just stupid.
RIP Cat
Like they say.. Common sense isn't so common anymore.
Welcome to Alaska!
Let's just hope the guy
Let's just hope the guy doesn't sue the fellow that jumped in to rescue him. "I didn't start bleeding until I got a face full of broken glass."
Is this a joke?
No, seriously. I honestly can't believe someone would just blindly take advice from GPS and turn right if there was WATER in that direction. He had to have seen a drop off. That's why they have GPS that you can listen to. So you can keep your eyes on the road. I feel terrible for that poor cat that had to suffer because of his owner's lack of common sense.
Bumper sticker
Did the car have a bumper sticker reading, "I drove the Alaska Marine Highway."? Maybe he thought it was cheating to use a boat.
Edit to add. Welcome to Alaska dude. You first day was a doozy. One day you will have a great story of your first and weirdest day in Alaska.
Hiker, you are making a big
Hiker, you are making a big assumption there. Given his adventures so far, this may just be the first of many weird situations and maybe not the weirdest. Although he will have to work to top this one.
Hopefully
He was just visiting and not staying, because we don't need anymore imports that are clueless. "Oh look, there's water, must be an underwater tunnel to where I need to go!" Here's your sign! go back to where you came from!
The guy was following orders
Anchorage news reported the driver was reporting for duty at Joint Base Elmendorf/Richardson....
When I was a kid we had to
When I was a kid we had to use a map and compass to drive into the water.
Poor Cat
He's in a better place now, away from this retard. The wrong creature died in this incident.
I Have Just One Question
If someone tell's you to go jump in the lake are you going to do it?
Blind GPS Follower
He must have thought that we do things very differently in Alaska.
