JPD, business owner seek graffiti suspects

Posted: September 16, 2012 - 12:00am

The Juneau Police Department Crime of the Week for Friday is in reference to a vandalism.

Sgt. Paul Hatch said in a release that a business owner from the 1700 block of Ralph’s Way in the Lemon Creek area contacted JPD on Aug. 16 to report a large amount of graffiti at the business. The caller said the graffiti appeared the night prior.

According to the release, an unknown person had used white spray paint to write the words “YOMP” and “REAPERZ,” plus unreadable words on the building. The word “GEKO” was also spray painted on a power box outside the business and painted alongside a fence outside the business.

The victim said he or she would give up to a $1,000 award for information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s).

Anyone with information regarding this or any other crime is encouraged to log onto the Juneau Crime Line at juneaucrimeline.com and report the tip. Tipsters are guaranteed anonymity.

Crime Line is a nonprofit organization composed of a cross-section of the community and is designed to aid police investigations.

Are you kidding me??

What about the 1000s of gallons of heating fuel stolen in Juneau in the past few years. many from seniors like myself. Yes, I keep a lock on the tank. This hasn't kept them from steeling. This is not a 5 gal jug operation. In the recent police blotter there was 100+ gallons stolen. Maybe this should be the crime of the month or maybe the year. Much of this is stolen from seniors who can barely afford the cost of heating fuel.

So Halvis

Do what this property owner did, and offer a reward for the apprehension of the thieves. Maybe one of them will turn in the other - no honor among...

Double Standards

Spray paint a wall, it's graffiti.

Spray paint the street, it's a memorial.

Genius.

The Emperor has spoken! I agree.

The 'memorial' needs to go, and soon...oh and at who's expense? hmmm....

Yeah, the property owner needs to up the reward. The little vandals will get squealed on for sure.

Halvis -

I heard a suggestion to combat the turds stealing gas and fuel oil - bait 'em with some sugar sweetened gas in a visible jug and let nature take it's course.

@HALVIS

I like hereswhatithink's suggestion, classic reversal.

Halvis,

You are right locking a fuel tank is usually not really locking it. You would either have to build a structure around it that can be locked, or use chain locks that can be fastened to the tank or a nearby wall. This way they cannot use wrenches to spin the pipes off. I wish we could exile these villains from coming back to Juneau; stealing from our community is sickening, stealing from the elderly, should land them in a pillory for public humiliation.

It is not really what I do, Halvis, but if you contact me, I would be willing to stop by your place and help you figure out a way to secure you tank better. Probably have to be after all of this election hoorah, but let me know. vote4paulnowlin@yahoo.com

Graffiti Vandalism

The crime of graffiti vandalism costs Americans in Alaska and the other 49 states more than $12 billion a year in clean-up expenses according to graffiti experts. Realtors tell us that neighborhoods suffering frequent graffiti vandalism see a decline in property values of 15%. As noted at www.DefacingAmerica.com , we don't have an art problem, we have a vandalism problem. From Alaska to Florida we need to do more to prevent and control graffiti crimes. Law enforcement officers have seen graffiti vandalism as a gateway crime. Graffiti writers often graduate to perform more serious crimes.

HA re:fuel jugs

Funny about the sugar jugs... I just told a friend that when I read it on the news... Set up a bunch of jugs that will ruin whatever they pour them into. I suspect at least some of the thefts will reduce.

Now if there was a way to get equal punishment on the fuel tanks for houses. (( Some one should invent something )) Mine also seems to vanish during the winter months I can fill it twice a month and still run out. I have had it checked for cracks and leaks and it's not my tank but I can't seem to do anything about it. Or even prove it's actually being stolen... It's just a mystery I sure hope at least its warming up kids somewhere in town.

A little google in case JPD didn't...

“YOMP” -- Several Meanings but one is about pot
“REAPERZ,” -- a D&B genre band
“GEKO” -- also a D&B genre band (from what I can find)

That should narrow down the search to ummmmm well 50% of the kids 14-20ish LOL
