AMHS releases summer 2013 schedule

The Alaska Marine Highway System announced the early release of its 2013 summer schedule on Tuesday.

“Releasing the schedule early greatly benefits the communities and businesses served by the Marine Highway System,” said Michael Neussl, Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities deputy commissioner for marine operations. “Not only does it provide Alaskans with more time to plan their travel but it also helps those traveling to Alaska during the busy summer months to book their travel well in advance.”

Release of the 2013 summer schedule was dependent upon the important public comment period held in August. The comment period is an opportunity for communities and individuals to review and comment on the proposed schedule, and to make AMHS aware of significant community events.

“We made several changes based on the comments received from individuals, businesses and communities across the state,” said Neussl. “For example, we added an additional sailing through Gustavus and addressed the day boat concerns in Northern Lynn Canal.”

The Alaska Marine Highway is following a record high year for revenue generation.

In fiscal year 2012, AMHS revenues totaled $52.2 million, an increase of over 7 percent from the previous year. With no fare increases, that revenue increase was generated by increased ridership.

including an all-time record high of 114,100 vehicles transported. That revenue generation represents a 30.4 percent recovery of the system’s operating cost.

Travelers are encouraged to make reservations in advance either online at, by calling 1-800-642-0066, or visiting ferry terminal staff throughout the system. Making advance reservations is the best way to guarantee space for passengers and vehicles, and it allows the system to operate more efficiently.

Fare information is available online or from reservations agents.
