Deadline to register to vote in Nov. 6 election is midnight

President, U.S. Representative, members of State Legislature on ballot

Posted: October 7, 2012 - 12:05am

While last Tuesday’s 31.9 percent municipal election voter turnout disappointed some, turnout has historically been higher for Alaska’s general elections.

But in order for a would-be voter to cast a full ballot in that election, which is coming up on Nov. 6, registration must happen by the end of the day Sunday.

The Alaska Division of Elections offices in the Mendenhall Mall and at the Court Plaza Building in downtown Juneau will be open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for people to come by and fill out voter registration forms or drop off their completed applications.

Applications can also be submitted by mail or fax, or by email as a PDF, JPG or TIFF file.

“We just need to make sure that all of the transmissions, electronic or no, are (postmarked) before midnight on the registration day,” said Jacque Boucher, who works in the office of Elections Director Gail Fenumiai.

Fenumiai said in an email Thursday that it is possible for someone who misses the deadline to vote, but only in the presidential election.

“If someone misses the deadline, we still encourage them to register,” Fenumiai wrote. “Those missing the 30-day registration cutoff will need to vote a questioned ballot at the polls on Election Day and because it is a presidential election year, their vote will count ONLY for the office of President and Vice-President.”

Alaska’s three electoral votes are virtually certain to go for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee for president, and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan. No Democrat has carried Alaska since 1964.

Also up for election this year are the seats of every member of the Alaska House of Representatives, along with half of the seats in the Alaska State Senate.

Sen. Dennis Egan, D-Juneau, is not up for reelection this year.

Juneau’s two state representatives, Reps. Cathy Muñoz and Beth Kerttula, ran unopposed in their respective parties’ primaries in August — Muñoz is a Republican, while Kerttula is a Democrat — and are unopposed in the general election as well.

The seat of Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, who represents all of Alaska in the United States House of Representatives, is also up for reelection. Young is widely expected to win a 21st term in Congress over state Rep. Sharon Cissna, D-Anchorage.

Voter registration statistics released Wednesday, the day after Juneau’s municipal election, show the number of registered voters climbing to 24,842, higher than both the 24,402 voters registered as of Oct. 3 last year and the 24,799 voters registered by Oct. 3, 2010, the last general election year in Alaska, when the gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races were on the ballot.

However, this year’s number remains lower than the 25,182 voters registered in Juneau as of Oct. 3, 2008, about a month before the last presidential election. The gap has remained virtually unchanged, from 346 registrations separating the 2012 numbers from the 2008 numbers last month (http://bit.ly/SA8ivl), to 340 this month.

Under Alaska state law, the voter registration deadline is 30 days before an election.
