Man shot outside Anchorage nightclub

ANCHORAGE — A man who was shot and killed outside a nightclub that was hosting its annual Halloween party may have been trying to come to the aid of two women after it appears that a man in a Richard Nixon mask tried to knock one of them down.

The man who was shot outside of Platinum Jaxx in downtown Anchorage was 27-year-old Said Beshirov of Anchorage, police said Monday.

Jess Hepper, one of the nightclub’s owners, told the Anchorage Daily New that police are pouring over images from a security camera outside the club. He said it shows a man wearing a Richard Nixon mask, a man in a cowboy costume and a third man without a costume confronting two women as they tried to leave the club.

Hepper said the man in the Richard Nixon mask went up to one of the women and bumped her with his chest in an attempt to knock her down. He said it appears that the man who was shot may have been trying to help the women.

The shooting occurred early Sunday as the bar was closing and patrons were leaving the club.

Medics rushed the victim to the hospital where he died of gunshot wounds.

Anchorage police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said detectives are asking the public to provide any video they may have shot on their smartphones.

“They believe there are videos out there they have not seen,” he said.

Parker said police will download the videos and immediately return smartphones to their owners.

Cameras inside the club showed that the man who was killed, as well as the other group of men, were all inside the club earlier and didn’t cause trouble, Hepper said.

He said the club has 10 to 13 security guards working on a busy Saturday night. The club usually takes the pictures of patrons coming in and scans their IDs. But he said on Saturday pictures weren’t taken because people were in costume.
