$9.7 million for Alaska LIHEAP

Alaska will receive $9.7 million in 2013 through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

These heating assistance funds are allocated as part of the U.S. Senate Fiscal Year 2013 Continuing Resolution.

Assistance is available to Alaska families that make 150 percent of the federal poverty level. For a family of four that is $33,075.

Senator Lisa Murkowski was part of a group of Senators who pushed for language in the current continuing resolution that assured 2012-level federal funding, according to the Senator’s recent press release.

The assistance 19,000 Alaskan households received in 2012 averaged $1,120. Average benefit in Alaska in 2011 was $1,502. The number of households served has increased over 10 percent 2010 to 2012.

“…oftentimes for the most vulnerable Alaskans,” according to the release. Disabled, children under 5 years of age and the elderly make up over 90 percent of recipients.
