Driving on crushed glass

New roads in Alaska can now be paved with crushed recycled glass.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities approved the use of manufactured glass aggregate that builders can mix in with gravel to strengthen roadways.

The product looks like shiny pea gravel and feels like worn beach glass, according to the release.

Approval of the material was initiated by Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling and ADOT&PF’s Materials Engineer Committee.

Using recycled glass reduces landfill waste and the amount of roadway gravel used, according to an ADOT&PF press release.
