KODIAK — The Weather Channel’s “Coast Guard Alaska” is back with more search and rescues, medevacs and looks at the Coast Guard life in Kodiak.

The third season of the popular Kodiak-based show premiered Wednesday. This season will feature six hour-long episodes that follow the stories of the real Coast Guardsmen at Coast Guard Base Kodiak and other Alaska stations.

“I think what viewers can expect to see is what they’ve come to expect and love about ‘Coast Guard Alaska,’” series producer Tom Langan said. “It’s the Coast Guard working with and for the people of Alaska to keep everyone safe, especially in the maritime community and those folks in the remote villages of Alaska.”

The show highlights some of the challenges the Coast Guardsmen go through day to day.

“It’s the story of obstacles they have to overcome, operating in an environment up there,” Langan said. “It’s the weather, the sea states, the terrain and the vast distances they have to cover.”

The first season of the show aired last winter, and focused primarily on Air Station Kodiak; the second season aired in April. This new season will highlight Coast Guardsmen at Air Station Kodiak and Sitka. It also includes some footage of operations in Cordova.

“I think the American people show an interest in Alaska, and I think an interest in the Coast Guard,” Langan said. “There are large sections of the country where the Coast Guard doesn’t necessarily come into play on a regular basis, but they are always out there working for us and helping people when they need help.”

The film crew shot the footage for season three starting in the late spring, and wrapped up at the end of October.

Langan couldn’t officially confirm whether or not the show would be renewed for a fourth season.

“I think, without saying too much, that people can definitely expect to see more of Coast Guard Alaska,” he said. “We’re not going anywhere anytime soon.”
