Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins receives recount totals from Alaska Division of Elections Director Gail Fenumiai after he held his lead in Monday's recount against Rep. Bill Thomas, R-Haines, in the race for House District 34.

A recount in the close House District 34 election conducted Monday confirmed Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins as the winner of the election, marking a pickup for Democrats in Southeast Alaska.

The recount, which was requested by Rep. Bill Thomas, R-Haines, wrapped up just before 1 p.m. Monday. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins’ 34-vote margin of victory over Thomas was shaved to 32 votes after the recount, as Thomas picked up seven new votes and Kreiss-Tomkins added five.

“Not a whole lot changed,” said Elections Director Gail Fenumiai. “When one would gain, another would gain.”

Speaking Monday afternoon by phone from the Lower 48, where he is visiting his wife’s family, Thomas said he will not contest the results any further.

That means the vote totals for the district, which encompasses Sitka as well as much of rural Southeast Alaska, including the communities of Haines, Angoon, Craig and Metlakatla, are final.

“No, we don’t plan to do anything,” said Thomas. “We’ll accept the results and we’ll go forward from there.”

Kreiss-Tomkins, who attended the recount as an observer, said he is pleased to be finished with it.

“It’s nice to have a point of punctuation at the end of the election,” Kreiss-Tomkins said.

While recounts usually do not change the outcome of elections, Kreiss-Tomkins said, he admitted he was “a little bit” anxious before the recount.

“I think I was nervous up until there was total closure on the election,” said Kreiss-Tomkins.

Kreiss-Tomkins, a Democrat from Sitka, said the next step for him is returning to his constituents before the legislative session begins next month.

“I think our campaign was about trying to offer full and equal access of government to every community, no matter how small, no matter how remote or isolated,” Kreiss-Tomkins said. “This is a rural Southeast Alaska district, and I’m going to try to get back to the communities before session, if I can. And that’s really important to me. And that’s what we were doing for the campaign, and now that the campaign’s done, continuing doing the same thing.”

In the Alaska House of Representatives, Kreiss-Tomkins added, he intends to bring the same “high-energy advocacy” from his campaign to representing the district’s interests.

Kreiss-Tomkins also offered some warm words for Thomas.

“I think it’s really important to acknowledge the legacy Bill has left our district,” said Kreiss-Tomkins. “He cares about Southeast. He worked hard for Southeast. And you know, I and many others are grateful for his eight years of service.”

House District 34 was the last unresolved race from the Nov. 6 general election. Another Democrat who had a close race, Anchorage Sen. Hollis French, survived a recount last Thursday.

Advice for the new kid

Jonathan, I thought that since you are about to enter into a realm where you have no previous experience I’d help you out with the rules of the game.

I know that given the stylish hours that high schools are keeping nowadays you are going to have some trouble if nobody clues you in; Work starts at seven in the morning. You will be expected to continue to work until at least seven or eight in the evening.

Whining is still allowed but you will find that it's been raised to a high art by your fellow minority members.

Alcohol and drugs are commonplace in the halls of the legislature but be careful not to actually get caught using them.

Sex? Lots is available (of all sorts) for free so don’t pay for any… it’s poor form. Oh, on that subject, you are not getting the George Jacko suite at the Driftwood. You don’t have enough seniority.

Money? Your problems are over. You are now officially on the take, just like all of your colleges. Again, don’t get caught.

re: inhuman, wavemkr, AH HA

Your implication (that Jonathan is somehow incapable because of his age) is ridiculous, as is your association of juvenile behavior with the Democratic minority. Most importantly, however, you are showing incredible disrespect to a young man who has already accomplished more in his 24 years than most do in a lifetime. I suggest you research his biography a little bit more.

Johnathan has been a standout in Southeast for a long time. I should know; he regularly beat me in debate tournaments during my freshman year and after graduation matriculated at Yale University, where he received an education that was undoubtedly far more comprehensive and in-depth than your own.

I guess I'm really tiptoeing around what I mean to say, namely that Mr. Kreiss-Tompkins is far more conscientious and intelligent than any of you (though he would surely dismiss this, as he's a pretty modest guy). If you think you can do better (and I assure you, you can't), run against him next time.

Jonathan dropped out of college

Apparently think Jonathan is smart because his graduate school mother and graduate school father was able to get him admitted into Yale University. He dropped out without graduating.

Good Juneau Empire, you finally got it right. A win for JKT.

JKT earned the trust of voters one door-knock at a time, demonstrating that he is a good listener, willing to share information, and has a vision for public policy that will benefit Alaskans for the long-term. This is a huge victory of integrity over pork-barrel incumbency. Thomas had this district gerry-mandered for his benefit, called in all his chits, and lost to a better.

This win also allows Rep. Scott Kawasaki to fill the last seat on the House Finance Committee.

Good news for SE, good news for Fairbanks, good news for Alaska.

Interesting negative comments from those with short memories

Terry Gardiner was elected from Ketchikan in his early twenties, and became Speaker before he was 30.

Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins may be young, but he beat a member of the "powerful House Finance Committee" because he is also smart and campaigned hard.

Too bad some of the commenters here don't respect the constitution and the democracy it creates.

Or are sore losers. Or both.

too bad the elections are just a " popularity contest" and not for electing the best qualified persons available. I am positive Haines will suffer under Sitka libs choice of representative.

Wow, I guess all of these people are missing the point

The native villagers gave Sealaska board members Bill Thomas & Albert Kookesh the boot in a free and fair election where it is one person, one vote. Thomas, a Republican, and Kookesh, a Democrat, lost where they could not rely on the corporate proxy vote to keep themselves & their friends in office.

Sealaska has been using this corporate public relations re-branding maneuver - keep on referring to tribal member shareholders, only Sealaska is not a tribe and its does not provide any governmental services. Sealaska is like any corporation in that elections are rigged and a minority can control the corporation, nothing democratic about that.

It has been great to hear Bill Thomas meltdown on Alaska Public Radio, at least Albert Kookesh had the good sense to keep quiet. Bill has lashed out everywhere - attacked Tlingit elders, attacked Natives, attacked commercial fishermen, and basically is a sore loser.

Hoonah Project

Let this defeat be a lesson to those who would stonewall and obstruct good projects, like the Hoonah Cruiseship dock, to "help" buddies" as opposed to helping communities. Good riddens Bill! Your constituents have spoken! Let the project begin. Kudos to Mayor Mayor Seferino Villarreal for not backing down to corporations, the cruise ship industry and their bought and paid for politicians (Minus two this session) who don't have the community's long term best interests at heart.
