State Board of Education to meet by distance in Juneau

The Alaska Board of Education and Early Development will meet by video and teleconference on Monday at 12 p.m.

The meeting will originate from the auxiliary boardroom at the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development at 801 West 10th Street in Juneau.

The public is invited to attend or to connect to the meeting by teleconference. Persons may listen to and make public comment at the oral hearing at: 1-800-315-6338, using code 8578#.

In addition to the DEED auxiliary boardroom in Juneau, video conference sites include: Anchorage, GCI Tower 2550 Denali Street, 6th floor; Fairbanks Legislative Information office, 1292 Sadler Way #308; Kodiak, Kodiak Borough School District Central Office, 722 Mill Bay Road; Kotzebue, Northwest Arctic Borough School District Central Office; Point Heiden, Lake & Peninsula Borough School District, Meshik High School; and Mat-Su Borough School District, 501 North Gulkana, Palmer.

The board may open up public comment on several topics, including proposed regulations concerning norm-referenced testing. Changes include repealing requirements for a standardized norm-referenced test and the reporting of norm-referenced test results, and repealing assessment-related questionnaires.

Another prospective topic for public comment is proposed regulations regarding district-operated statewide residential educational programs, to allow variable-term programs, which rotate students in and out of the program during the school year for the entire school term.

Lastly, proposed regulations for school facilities to create an energy efficiency standard for school construction and major maintenance projects may also be opened up to public comment.

The board may adopt regulations regarding standards for school accreditation. The accrediting agency for schools in the Northwest region, now called Northwest Accreditation Commission, has affiliated with the non-profit AdvancED, and therefore uses its published accreditation standards.
