JUNEAU — Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski said Thursday she is not convinced that Chuck Hagel is the right choice for U.S. secretary of defense.
Murkowski said in a statement she is not inclined to support Hagel’s nomination “because of his grasp and vision on the key questions of our time: Iran, complexities in the Middle East and the constant threat of terror networks.” However, she said she wants to hear from Alaskans, and get their thoughts, when she returns home on recess.
“Between my personal meeting with Senator Hagel and his unsteady performance in his confirmation hearing, I am not convinced that he is the right person to run the Department of Defense,” she said.
Both Murkowski and Alaska’s Democratic senator, Mark Begich, voted Thursday to move the Senate to a final vote on Hagel’s nomination. That vote fell short of the required 60-vote threshold. Another vote is expected later this month.
Begich also had met with Hagel and said, ultimately, he feels Hagel would be able to lead the effort at the Pentagon.
Republicans have been blocking the nomination. Some have challenged Hagel’s past statements and votes on Israel, Iran, Iraq and nuclear weapons.
Murkowski said it’s not unreasonable to ask for more time to fully consider the nomination. But she said Cabinet nominees deserve an up or down vote.
Begich expressed frustration with how the process has played out, calling it “unbelievable,” and said it speaks to the need for filibuster reform.
He agreed that the matter calls for an up or down vote. “If you don’t like them, vote no. Have the guts to do it. What people do is hide behind these procedural votes so they don’t have to make a stand,” Begich said in an interview.
“I’ll tell you, it shows to the American people, to Alaskans, why people are frustrated with Washington. This is another example. ... Vote yes or no. Let’s move on,” he said. “We’ve got deficits to deal with, we’ve got an economy to get back on track, and then we’ve got several other things to do.”

AIPAC has given her her marching orders.
Pretty sad for someone who
Pretty sad for someone who campaigned as a moderate against the tea party. I guess all those democrats and independents should have buyer's remose now if they didn't already. Israel and Iran are more important than our own country. Israel can and should take care of itself. we have our own problems to worry about.
"To be honest with you, Neil,
"To be honest with you, Neil, it goes back to there’s a lot of ill will towards Senator Hagel because when he was a Republican, he attacked President Bush mercilessly and say he was the worst President since Herbert Hoover and said the surge was the worst blunder since the Vietnam War, which was nonsense. He was anti-his own party and people — people don’t forget that. You can disagree but if you’re disagreeable, then people don’t forget that,” – John McCain
more of the same
on going GOP self destructing motivations. The GOP is on their way to becoming as extinct as the Bull Moose Party as they continually find more ways to demonstrate their intentions to create havoc. I wonder what justification they will use should an actual incident happen and no replacement for the Defense Secretary has been made. Certainly they'll find a way to blame Obama and not themselves as this process drags along.
I've concluded the conservatives would find reasons to block an appointment of G W Bush to anything if Obama was making the appointment.
Same old sad song
Zionism will not be impeded. Goyin, get out of the way.
Oh come on...
...As if the Dems didn't try to do the EXACT same things with Bush's nominees. Get real.
If she has reservations about Hagel, that doesn't automatically mean she's some sort of tea party member. And just because she's a moderate that doesn't hold her to blindly supporting everything the president does, either.
So soon she forgets.......
That she is only there because the other choices were simply unacceptable to Alaskans.
After the painful embarassment of S.Palin our poor state needed no more politcal nutcases.
After Lisa, & that idiot
After Lisa, & that idiot Begich stabbed Israel in the back by NOT voting to stop Hussein Obama's arms sales to the radical Islamic Brotherhood regime that is now governing Egypt.
I am glad to see she still has some loyalty to one of our strongest allies.
Hi Madison
I wondered what became of you.
Now buh-bye as you go on my 'ignore' list.
Not about Hagel
Hagel was nominated to implement Obama policy, not his own. Let's get past that. It's the weakness of Harry Ried and his inability to reform the filibuster that has led us into another era of obstruction on everything Obama. This is just the beginning.
lat - Now can you please
lat - Now can you please 'root out' pp for us. I miss him!
Why are you so scared of the opposing viewpoint?
And think how many more points you could have if you didn't "ignore" a third of the posters. You might even win the door prize!
Hagel
This has nothing to do with party politics. What are his qualifications? A few years military service? Millions have that! Being endorsed by Iran? Stating that the military won't be hurt that much by sequester? Being partial to Palestine over Israel? Thinking that the surge was a bad idea? (If we had put enough of an "overwhelming" force out in the first place we'd probably have lost far fewer Americans.) Certainly Obama can find someone equally non-qualified who is more in tune with the thinking of most Americans in this important post.
Too bad Sen. Stevens is long gone, or perhaps there would be enough serious members in the Senate not to consent to an extremely poor choice for this position,
