Board of Education to meet in Juneau

Will also tour Mt. Edgecumbe school

The Alaska Board of Education and Early Development will meet on March 7 and March 8 in the state board room on the ground floor of 801 West 10th Street in Juneau.


The meeting is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, and 8:30 a.m. on Friday, March 8. The public is invited to attend.

The board will take public comment on agenda and non-agenda items on March 7. The public may offer comments and testimony beginning at 8:10 a.m. at the meeting site or through the Legislative Information Offices in Anchorage, Barrow, Bethel, Cordova, Delta Junction, Dillingham, Fairbanks, Glennallen, Homer, Juneau, Kenai, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Nome, Petersburg, Seward, Sitka, Tok, Valdez, Wasilla and Wrangell.

The purpose of the meeting is to hold a work session and a business meeting.

Topics at the work session include: three charter school applications, five district requests for waivers from the requirement to spend the 70 percent minimum expenditure on instruction, the capital improvement program list, and a presentation about the Rasmuson Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program.

The regulations that may go out for public comment are related museum services and school accountability. The regulations that may be adopted are related to codes for school facilities and statewide residential programs.

Topics at the business meeting include regulations that may go out for public comment and regulations that may be adopted, as well as reports on teaching and learning support; assessment, accountability and information management; the budget and current legislation; Mt. Edgecumbe High School; the state libraries, archives and museums; rural education; legal matters; commissioner’s topics; approval of minutes of previous meetings; approval of the capital improvement program list; approval of charter school applications, and approval of the district waiver requests.

The annual meeting of the Public School Trust Fund Advisory Board will also be held at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 in the same location. Board representatives and representatives from the Alaska Department of Revenue will attend.

The day before the meeting starts, on Wednesday, March 6, board members will tour Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka.
