Walmart manager shot by double amputee

Posted: March 17, 2013 - 12:08am

ANCHORAGE — A double amputee shot a Walmart manager Saturday after he was asked to put his service dog on a leash, Anchorage police said.

An off-duty police officer who was shopping at the time detained the suspect as he was trying to leave the store, said Anita Shell, a police spokeswoman.

The 45-year-old man was being questioned at police headquarters. His name won’t be released until he is charged, Shell said.

The manager, 33-year-old Jason Mahi, was in surgery Saturday afternoon.

According to police, the man entered the store in a motorized cart at about 3 p.m. and went the sporting goods section. Mahi asked him to the put the dog on a leash or leave. The man then pulled out a gun and shot the manager in the abdomen, police said.

Officers removed the man’s prosthetic legs and put him in the back of a patrol car, the Anchorage Daily News reported. They held his dog in the back of another police cruiser. An officer said she was driving the dog home.

The newspaper reported that the store remained open despite the violence, with many shoppers unaware a shooting occurred. Crumpled police tape sat behind the gun counter in the sporting goods section.

This would have been cool to

This would have been cool to watch on "Alaska State Troopers." Too bad Anchorage Police responded instead of the troopers.

Sorry Rough Cut,

I got a few I'd like to put out there, just can't bring myself to do so! Darn political correctness!

It didn't go unnoticed by most shoppers

My friend and her three young children were terrified. This could have resulted in a much worse tradegy. In Juneau the sporting goods department sits next to the toy department. This is reckless and unforgivable behavior.

OK skirkz,

I WAS going to say "When he gets to court, he won't have a leg to stand on"! But I'm not going to! I quite simply refuse to say that! Ever!

first, let's hope the victim is ok

and doesn't have long term complications. Then prosecute this scum to the fullest extent of the law.

Jokes about a working person getting shot by a sicko while doing his job are pathetic. If you think abdominal surgery is fun; think again.

I just hope this criminal doesn't get the usual "Alaska pass" on sentencing and get some stupid suspended sentence that means nothing.

Chill out Sunshine!

Most humor is based on reality, and dark humor is no exception. We were far better off years ago when we could laugh a little easier. Now we must tiptoe around every word, some fun! Rodney Dangerfield said it right!

If I were the one shot and

If I were the one shot and laying in the hospital bed, you can bet I would be saying the same jokes...Get a life. Laughing about it is not the same as condoning it.

Carry on...

WOW really... "The newspaper reported that the store remained open despite the violence, with many shoppers unaware a shooting occurred" The last thing we want to happen is the store loses commerce for a few hours... UNREAL.

While I agree w/the comments by many that humor is a great tool to deal w/this type of ugliness, you're kidding yourself if you don't think things like this couldn't happen in our glorious WAL-MART too........

Be grateful for what you have and count your blessings!!
