Police: Man bites off-duty officer helping at soup kitchen

Posted: June 5, 2013 - 12:05am

ANCHORAGE — A man was arrested after he severely bit an off-duty police officer who was volunteering at an Anchorage soup kitchen, police said Tuesday.

Stephen Faigle, 19, is charged with assault and was set to appear in court Tuesday afternoon. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.

The officer, Joel Breiner, was volunteering with another off-duty officer, Patrick Martin, at the Downtown Soup Kitchen on Monday afternoon when an argument broke out between Faigle and another man in the kitchen’s patio, police said.

The officers told the men to “break it up,” prompting the other man to leave, police said. They said Faigle became combative with the officers and swung at Breiner and bit him in the arm.

Faigle’s 26-year-old girlfriend, Nora Hanes, was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge for allegedly yelling profanities at the off-duty and responding officers.

Breiner was treated at a local hospital and released, police spokeswoman Anita Shell said.

Because of the severity of the officer’s wound, Faigle’s blood was drawn to test for drugs and communicable diseases.

In May, Faigle also became combative with security officers at the Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall after he stole a $70 bottle of perfume, Shell said. Faigle was on his back outside the store, resisting attempts by security officers to handcuff him, according to Shell. A mall official ended up conducting a citizen’s arrest, and Faigle was cited and is scheduled for a June 13 court appearance on misdemeanor charges of assault and theft by shoplifting.

At the time, Faigle was with Hanes, who urged him to fight security, Shell said.

In the biting case, Faigle’s bail was set at $2,500.
