Indian Affairs seeks comment on process of acknowledging tribes

Posted: June 28, 2013 - 3:34pm

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is seeking comment on how to improve the process for acknowledging an Indian tribe. Tribes seeking federal recognition can spend decades waiting and fighting for recognition. It’s an expensive process that is criticized for being arbitrary and difficult.

Comments can be made on the process until Aug. 16. After this first comment period, BIA will prepare a new proposed rule which will open a second round of consultation to allow for further refining of the rule.

To submit a comment:
