The day after a Fourth of July celebration is one of the busiest days of the year at the Gastineau Humane Society. Chava Lee is the executive director of the Society and warns people to pay special attention to their pets when fireworks are going off.

“Oftentimes these are animals that we would not normally see,” Lee said. “The fireworks may never have scared them before but this year it might.”

The humane society offers these tips to keep your pets safe and happy this holiday.

• Keep your pet indoors and in safe place. If your pet is used to being crated, go ahead and crate them. If they’re not crate-trained, now is not the time for them to experience it for the first time. Also, don’t leave your pet alone in a vehicle.

• Be sure to use a leash if you do have to take your dog outside and be careful when opening doors and windows.

• Bring out the toys or turn on the radio or TV to distract your pet.

• Close the blinds or drapes in your home so that they aren’t bothered by the fireworks.

• This is the time of year when a normally docile pet might bite or scratch. Don’t have guests over that your pet isn’t already familiar with. Just because your pet has never been aggressive before doesn’t mean that this won’t be the year when they show you a mean face.

• If your pet has a tendency to chew things, put everything away. Keep them away from electrical cords and expensive shoes until the festivities are over.

If your pet is lost or hurt, call Animal Control at 789-6997. The morning after the fireworks, you can call the Gastineau Humane Society at 789-0260 if you think your pet might have been picked up.
