Administrator of Sitka health consortium leaving

SITKA — The medical director and administrator of a tribal health consortium in Sitka is leaving after 19 years for a new job in Oregon, a consortium spokesman said.

Dr. Marty Grasmeder will take a medical director position in Portland, Ore., in September, said Michael Jenkins, a spokesman for the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium. The move will put Grasmeder closer to family.

Grasmeder was on vacation and unavailable for comment, the Sitka Daily Sentinel reported ( ).

The consortium’s assistant medical director, Dr. John Baciocco, will take over as medical director from Grasmeder. Noel Selle-Rea will be interim administrator.

Selle-Rea was hired on a six-month contract while the consortium seeks a permanent replacement. Selle-Rea is extremely qualified in running rural hospitals, Jenkins said.

Selle-Rea’s termination last year as CEO of the Wrangell Medical Center sparked a legal fight with the city of Wrangell over the severance package he received from the hospital’s board. That matter is settled and didn’t factor in to the consortium’s decision to hire him, Jenkins said.

Several people within the consortium have expressed interest in becoming the permanent administrator, Jenkins said.

“More than likely, they’re going to find somebody for that position from that group,” he said. “There are several qualified people within the organization.”
