New report details the economic impact of fisheries in Alaska

The combined value of Alaska seafood exports and retails sales was $6.4 billion in 2011, according to a report released Wednesday by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute. ASMI is a marketing organization supported by the State of Alaska and the Alaska seafood industry to promote Alaska seafood. The 104-page report is based on numbers collected in 2011.

The report says 63,100 workers were employed in the Alaska seafood industry. About 13,500 of those workers were in Southeast Alaska fisheries and generated about $321 million in labor income. While residents made up about half of Southeast’s seafood industry workforce, they accounted for about 78 percent of the industry’s labor income, the report says. The seafood industry directly accounted for 13 percent of all labor income earned in Southeast.

Salmon accounted for about 75 percent of Southeast’s total wholesale value in 2011; halibut and black cod accounted for about 16 percent. The report says Southeast’s seafood industry included about 2,300 active commercial fishing vessels and that all but 444 of them landed salmon that year.
