Volunteers sought to stage Arctic Winter Games

Posted: September 5, 2013 - 12:15am

FAIRBANKS — Organizers of the Arctic Winter Games are looking for more than 1,000 volunteers to help stage the upcoming event, set to take place in Fairbanks for the first time in more than two decades.

The games match athletes from the far north and the Arctic in a weeklong event that is expected to draw thousands of athletes and visitors.

A volunteer rally is planned for Sept. 13 at the Lathrop High School gym, featuring world-class cross-country skier and Anchorage resident Holly Brooks. There will be live music, food and an opportunity to shop for Arctic Winter Games gear. There also will be a funding announcement from BP and the unveiling of the games’ 2014 volunteer uniform.

“We are just six months away from the games and are very excited about getting the community involved in this unique international experience,” Karen Lane, general manager of the Fairbanks 2014 Arctic Winter Games, said in a news release Tuesday.

The games are scheduled for March 15-22, and Fairbanks will host them for the first time since 1988. Organizers are seeking a total of 2,500 volunteers to help, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.

“The whole goal of the event is for us to really rally our volunteers, get them excited and to capture new volunteers,” said Camille Relatado, marketing and merchandise manager for the games. “It’s really going to take the whole town.”

Organizers hope to have all volunteers committed by Dec. 31.
