Mallott confirms plans to run for governor

Byron Mallott has announced he will run for governor as a Democrat in 2014.

JUNEAU — An Alaska Native leader and former mayor of Yakutat plans to run for governor next year.

Byron Mallott is the first announced Democratic candidate for the office; state Sen. Hollis French is exploring a run.

Republican Gov. Sean Parnell plans to seek re-election, while Republican Bill Walker intends to run as an independent.

Mallott is a member of the Sealaska Corp. board of directors. His has served as executive director of the Alaska Permanent Fund Corp., president of the Alaska Federation of Natives and director of the Alaska Public Radio Network.

He briefly served as mayor of Juneau and supported Republican U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s 2010 write-in campaign.

Mallott, in a statement Monday, said he looks forward to campaigning and participating in public discussions about important issues facing Alaska.
