Wrangell considers sales tax reduction

Posted: September 27, 2013 - 12:47pm

WRANGELL — Voters in Wrangell will go to the polls Tuesday to decide whether to cut local sales tax from 7 percent to 5.5 percent.

KSTK-radio (http://bit.ly/14OS1ZS) reported the sales tax brings in about $500,000 per year.

Interim borough manager Jeff Jabusch said Wrangell will have to make changes if the measure is approved. The community has two annual tax-free shopping days that would go away. He said the mill rate would go up and property taxes would increase.

He said budget cuts also are likely.

Jabusch said less funding is likely to have an effect on public schools, snow plowing and amenities such as a health fair and Fourth of July fireworks.
