Constitution party leader plans run for governor

JUNEAU — The chairman of the Alaska Constitution Party plans to run for governor next year.

J.R. Myers filed a letter of intent on Monday.

Division of Elections Director Gail Fenumiai said by email that the Constitution Party is a political group but not a recognized political party in Alaska.

That means Myers would have to gather signatures to qualify to appear on the general election ballot.

The nominating petition allows candidates to list what political group they represent. Myers hopes to garner enough of the vote for the Alaska Constitution Party to become a recognized political party.
