JUNEAU — The state transportation department is ending seasonal maintenance on the Taylor and Denali highways on Oct. 15.
The department, in a release, says it doesn't maintain these highways during the winter. The department reminds drivers that traveling on non-maintained highways during winter is extremely risky.
The 160-mile Taylor Highway, which runs from Tetlin to Eagle, won't be maintained again until April, when a crew will begin plowing snow and ice to open the road over about four weeks.
Work to open the 135-mile Denali Highway will begin in early May. That highway runs from the Cantwell junction on the Parks Highway to the Paxson Lodge on the Richardson Highway.
