Fishing vessel sinks in Haines harbor

A 76-foot fishing vessel sank Saturday while moored at the Haines Harbor E float. The Neptune has an estimated 2,000 gallons of fuel aboard.

A Coast Guard response team from Juneau, along with personnel from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, has been dispatched to Haines.

The Coast Guard said that the vessel’s owner is currently arranging for contractors to clean up the spill. The Haines harbormaster reports that a boom has been placed around the vessel to contain the spill.

The cause of the sinking is still under investigation.
