Bethel company competes for Super Bowl ad spot

BETHEL — Three sisters who own a Bethel cosmetic company made with ingredients from the tundra are competing in a contest to win a free commercial for their products that would be aired during the next Super Bowl.


The Sparck sisters, who are triplets, run the company called ArXotica, whose name is a combination of the words arctic and exotic. The sisters say the name describes their Cup’ik country.

Supporters of the business can vote for ArXotica on the contest website. The entry with the most votes will win a commercial, KYUK reported.

“This is a chance for a small business who would never have the budget to get a big-time commercial in the biggest game of the year, so they’re sponsoring a contest where a small business can win a commercial in the Super Bowl,” said Cika Sparck. “So that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to be that company.”

ArXotica has made it so far as a second-round finalist in the contest.

“We were just so surprised, shocked and excited that we still have this chance,” Sparck said.

The sisters launched their business in 2006 after realizing their land could supply the ingredients for their product, just as it did for some of their food.

“We would look at the tundra as we were picking and we always knew, we would use all this food for everything, we gather, we use it for food, for medicine,” Sparck said. “What else could we do with it, it’s got to be good for, you know, the skin.”

The sisters handpick the berries, herbs and flower blossoms that go into their products. Those ingredients then go to a product-manufacturing plant in order to meet rigorous formulating, quality control and safety standards.

ArXotica recently was named by the Calista Corp. as the Business of the Year at the regional Native Corporation’s annual meeting.
