Parnell campaign reports email error

JUNEAU — Political emails, urging recipients to check out Gov. Sean Parnell’s campaign page on Facebook, were inadvertently sent to some governmental, education and legislative addresses, his campaign manager said.

Jerry Gallagher told The Associated Press he takes full responsibility for what he called a mistake. He said it happened Thursday and he reported it to the Alaska Public Offices Commission, or APOC.

Gallagher said the campaign has compiled a list of addresses from a number of different databases. It wasn’t immediately clear why some emails, ending in, edu or were included, though Gallagher told APOC staff, in an email provided to the AP, that the campaign was deleting all such addresses from its databases and would develop a process to assure there isn’t a repeat.

An APOC paralegal, Delight Mells, told Gallagher that staff had not initially found the situation to be a violation but “deleting these state email addresses to prevent future use is a wise action.”

Mells said APOC would follow up with Gallagher if senior staff find that corrective action is necessary.

The email encouraged recipients to check out or “like” Parnell’s campaign page on Facebook. Gallagher told APOC the campaign provided 4,900 email addresses to Facebook and the social media giant sent out the email. Of those, he said the campaign had determined that 45 were sent to addresses, nine to addresses ending in edu, eight to addresses ending in and 60 were sent to state email addresses for each of the 2011 legislators.

Gallagher told APOC he did not receive a copy of the email sent out by Facebook, so he had to rely on someone who did. The version he shared as an example was sent to an address for state Sen. John Coghill, R-North Pole.
