State requests Supreme Court review of decision in Katie John case

Posted: November 5, 2013 - 1:00am

The State of Alaska is requesting a review a court decision that gives the federal government control over hunting and fishing on navigable waters on state-owned land that is adjacent to federal land.

“This decision not only threatens the principle that Alaskans should manage their own fish and game, which was the impetus for Alaska statehood, but also the ability of the State to conserve its resources for future generations,” Attorney General Michael Geraghty said in a statement.

The state’s request to review the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision in State v. Jewell, more widely known as the Katie John case, was filed Monday. The Alaska Federation of Natives is expected to make a statement on the state’s appeal Tuesday.

A previous version of this article said the state was appealing the decision. The state is actually requesting a review, which sometimes leads to an appeal. We regret the error.
