Matanuska Electric approves slight rate decrease

ANCHORAGE — The Matanuska Electric Association board has approved a proposed rate decrease that could mean slightly lower power bills for members.

KTUU says the proposed rate change would have to be approved by the Regulatory Commission of Alaska.

The MEA board voted Nov. 11 to reduce rates by 1.13 percent.

Utility spokesman Kevin Brown says an average customer using slightly less than 800 kilowatt-hours per month would probably save about 98 cents in the monthly bill.

Brown says the board made the move based on a test year that ended Sept. 30, after internal operating costs came in lower than projected.

According to Brown, rates are fluid and subject to change, so it’s difficult to project the final impact.
