KODIAK — The building that once housed most city offices in Kodiak is being torn down.

Demolition work is underway on the old Kodiak Police Department building, the Kodiak Daily Mirror reported.

The city bought the building on Mill Bay Road in 1956, and it housed the police department, jail, courthouse and city offices before police became the sole occupants.

Most of the items the police department wanted to save have been taken to the new location, which opened in 2010. Among those was the pole with a red light that was on top of the building.

Before the department had radios, police officers on patrol would keep an eye on the building. If the light was on, they knew to call in or go the station.

Even though the light wasn’t working a decade ago, Ellis decided hang an American flag from it after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

“Our flagpole had fallen down, and we felt it was necessary to put a flag on top,” he said.

Rick Ryser, owner of Golden Alaska Excavating LLC, has saved pieces of the jail for the Baranov Museum, where his mother, Alice, is the archivist. Among items saved are the jailer’s window, made with bulletproof glass, and one of the locks from the jail door.

But with mice and overcrowded conditions, not many are upset the building is coming down.

“I don’t know of anybody who ever worked in there that’s going to shed one tear,” Ellis said.
