Sam Kito III named to replace Rep. Beth Kerttula for House District 32

Posted: February 21, 2014 - 1:56pm

Republican Gov. Sean Parnell named Sam Kito III Friday to replace former Juneau Democratic Rep. Beth Kerttula for House District 32.

Kito’s appointment is pending a confirmation from a majority of the House Democrats who are planning to meet on the issue Monday evening, said Rep. Chris Tuck, D-Anchorage, and the minority leader.

Kito was one of three finalists Tongass Democrats forwarded to Parnell. Interviews of the finalists took place Thursday.

Kito said he hopes to continue serving the people of the district in the future, but added that discussions on if he would run for reelection were premature. His term will expire in November of this year.

City and Borough Assemblyman Jesse Kiehl, one of the three finalists for the seat, told reporters after the announcement that he plans to seek another term on the Assembly and has no plans to run for the representative seat in November.

Kerttula, who was the house minority leader when the session began, announced her resignation in January to become a visiting fellow at the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford.

Although he was the best candidate Jessie Kiehl will better serve Juneau by staying on the assembly. Looks like a 2 time election loser won't be gerrymandered onto the assembly. Wheww!

I didn't realize you had submitted your name to be appointed to the Assembly IF Jesse had been picked...

There's a lot at stake this session.

It's good to know Juneau is fully represented as the legislature grapples with several divisive issues.

Any of the three choices would have done a great job representing Juneau. Thanks to all who threw in their hats and braved the slings and arrows of public scrutiny.

Good luck and best wishes to Mr. Kito. We're lucky to have you.

The best candidate to

The best candidate to represent the public is someone that is not able to ignore the unethical misconduct or wrong doing of their peers.
For example, there are people on the assembly & in the legislature that are willing to look the other way when important information is buried.

If Eagan doesn't run that means Munoz will run for his seat. Especially with Kerttula out of the race. So 2 Rep spots up for grabs. Time for Peter Froelich to take over that valley spot. It would be nice to have an independant thinker instead of a Capt Zero acolyte as valley House Rep..
