Bill Bennett, British Columbia’s minister of energy and mines, is scheduled to arrive in Juneau today on a four-day trip intended to calm Southeast Alaskans’ fears about mining along the border with Canada.
Bennett’s visit reciprocates a trip Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott took to British Columbia in May.
Mallott leads the working group appointed by Gov. Bill Walker to address the transboundary mine situation. Environmentalists, tribal groups and fishermen are concerned that improper development of mines in the boundary region could threaten the fishing industry in Southeast Alaska.
