At Eaglecrest Ski Area at midday Saturday, there were 12 inches of snow at the base and 68 inches at the top. It was 10 degrees at the base and 20 degrees on top.
The Williwaw, Sneaky, and Platter Beginner Slope trails had been groomed.
With minimal snow coverage on the lower slopes, only the Ptarmigan Chairlift and the Platter lift operated Saturday.
Early season conditions exist with hazards marked and unmarked on and off all trails. Only intermediate and expert terrain will be accessible off the Ptarmigan Chairlift, the ski area said.
It encouraged beginner and novice skiers and snowboarders to use the Platter Surface Lift.

Regarding nordic skiing, the Juneau Nordic Ski Club reported the following member observations on Saturday.
The upper and lower loops at Eaglecrest had not been groomed.
The Mendenhall Campground had 4 inches of bulletproof snow over ice that is rutted with gravel. Rock skis only!
Parking on Skater's Cabin Road is allowed only on the west side beginning with the intersection of the entrance road to Mendenhall Campground all the way to the West Glacier Trailhead Parking Lot.
At Mendenhall Lake, the lake ice was 2.5 inches thick at Skater's Cabin on Dec 28. The area of the lake was two-thirds skiable for skate skis; it was windblown and refrozen snow, which is skate skiable. The other areas were clear ice with hoar frost.
The Dredge Lakes was information was dated, and there was no report for Eagle Beach.
