ANCHORAGE — An afterschool program in the Anchorage area has started a string orchestra.
Using loaned and donated instruments. the Home Base program in Fairview hopes to get children interested in instruments such as the violin — and knock down some stereotypes, as well.
KTUU-TV reports the program serves children in the fourth through eighth grades. Its purpose is to help them succeed and to graduate from high school.
The director of the program, Shirley Mae Springer-Staten, says that as she grew up in Georgia, African American children didn’t often get a chance to play those instruments.
She’s got challenges ahead, such teaching a large group of youngsters how to read music.
