Unified district ready to serve

Posted: Monday, January 03, 2000

Capital City Fire/Rescue was established as a unified fire department in 1994. Prior to that, five different departments provided your fire and emergency medical services: Auke Bay, Douglas, Glacier, Juneau and Lynn Canal. Each of these departments had long histories of dedicated service to their individual neighborhoods and towns. This dedicated service continues in the city and borough, utilizing a unified approach. Like any organization of this size, with varied background and history, there have been growing pains. Realizing this, and because the members of the department want to provide the very best service to their community, early in 1999 we embarked on a strategic planning process. On Dec. 13, the initial phase of the process was presented to the Juneau Assembly. This baseline management report will become the tool we use in the year 2000 to develop our strategic plan.

Your firefighters and emergency medical services personnel are to be commended for wanting to improve the service to the community through this strategic planning process. It's a gutsy thing to ask for a study of your own operation, and we hope that you as our customers realize this and support our efforts.

Capital City Fire/Rescue and the Joint Chiefs' Committee are striving to create positive changes in the fire service. We would like the community of Juneau to know that if you call for fire, rescue or emergency medical services, we will respond in a rapid and professional manner. When we respond to an incident, the career and volunteer staffs of Capital City Fire/Rescue become one team; we always have and will continue to do so into the new millennium.

The 153 volunteer and career firefighters and emergency medical services personnel of Capital City Fire/Rescue hope you continue to have a safe holiday season.
