Police allege youth worker had hundreds of illicit images of kids

A former Boys & Girls Club instructor appeared in court last week charged with six counts of possessing child pornography after police said they found hundreds of photos and video images of teens and children stored in part on a computer hard drive stolen from the club.

Sound off on the important issues at

Jeffrey Malley, 29, is accused of obtaining images of children engaging in "lewd touching, sex, masturbation, lewd exhibition and sadomasochism," according to a two-page indictment issued by a grand jury.

"We're saddened and shocked," said Noelle Hardt, senior vice president of Boys & Girls Clubs Alaska. "We will be forthright with any family or staff and address any of their concerns head on."

Hardt said Malley is no longer employed with the club and his "separation" was unrelated to the police investigation. She said it is a personnel matter she cannot discuss.

Many of the pornographic images police found were stored on a computer hard drive that belonged to the Boys & Girls Club, Juneau police Sgt. Dave Campbell said.

The drive was discovered at Malley's David Street home in an Aug. 30 police raid, and the Juneau Boys & Girls Club fired Malley within days of the discovery, he said.

"They took immediate action," Campbell said.

Last August, acting on a tip from Malley's then-girlfriend, police said they confiscated about 50,000 pornographic images, mostly of adults, stored on the stolen hard drive and in a large stack of DVDs and CDs. The witness saw pornographic images of girls she believed were younger than 18, Campbell said.

Malley appeared in Juneau District Court on Dec. 26 and was released later on $5,000 bail.

The court issued a 20-day protection order to keep Malley at a distance from the witness.

During months of computer forensic work, police found several hundred images of girls believed to be 13 to 17 years old. Investigators found approximately 150 images of girls believed to be younger than 12.

"When you see the images, you immediately say that is a young child," Campbell said.

Malley's close working relationship with teenagers left police concerned about the origins of the pornography. Authorities now believe that the images were not produced locally. Still, Campbell urged any children that might have been subject to inappropriate action by Malley to call police.

Malley's background check gave no alert to the Boys & Girls Club human resources office, Hardt said.

"We screen all employees," she said.

Additionally, no complaints were made against Malley while he worked for the Boys & Girls Club, which had no evidence that he used the Internet inappropriately at work, she said.

Court records show only that Malley was convicted of a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated in April 2000.

Malley worked for the Boys & Girls Club as a "transition specialist and teen coordinator" from June 2006 until Sept. 5, 2007, according to Hardt.

Jay Wyatt, former manager of the Juneau Boys & Girls Club, described Malley as upstanding in a press release issued before the investigation.

"He goes above and beyond what is expected in creating a positive and life enhancing environment for our members. Mr. Malley has become a local hero for many teens," Wyatt said in the release.

Wyatt was replaced as manager last fall and was not available for comment on Malley's actions at the club.

Malley did not return a message Wednesday evening.

Much of his work at the Boys & Girls Club was done in partnership with the Johnson Youth Center to help teenagers transition from the treatment center and return to life in Juneau.

Malley helped the kids find work and places to live, JYC Superintendent Dennis Weston said.

Malley had access to JYC teens only in the company of JYC staff, Weston said. No complaints were made against Malley, he said.

"Malley provided information to kids," Weston said. "To hear something like that is just sad."
