PORTLAND, Ore. - An Oregon state trooper chased a suspect for nearly a mile on foot before collaring him as he tried to hide in a muddy canal.
A state police news release said trooper Jed Rzegocki responded to a single-vehicle crash Friday just south of Madras, and as he interviewed the driver at the scene the man took off running.
Rzegocki chased Gilberto Rivera-Villarreal through several farm fields and finally to an empty canal where police say he was trying to hide in some mud.
Police said Rivera-Villarreal is in custody and the charges he faces includes failing to register as a sex offender.
