Phyllis Ann Kunz died in December 2010 at her home on Village St. in Juneau.
She was born on Aug. 5, 1939, in Juneau to parents Cecilia and Edward Kunz Sr. and grandparents Lily and Jack Yarkon.
She was a member of the Look Nax Adee clan (Coho) and belonged to the Daqinaathit (Outwards House), a child of the KaagWaanTaan (Showasein, father) Box House, grandchild of the KaagWaanTaan, Yah Qwan, Gooch Hit (Wolf House) and great-grandchild of KaagWaanTaan, Kook Hit (Box House).
She attended the University of California in Santa Barbara, receiving a master’s degree in political science in 1979.
Before her children were born, she worked in the Governor’s office and with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Kunz was a member of the Church of God.
She is survived by her brother Ed Kunz Jr.; sister-in-law Percy Kunz; daughter Micalyne Ann Kunz McGhee and son-in-law Dale McGhee; daughter Nellie Elizabeth Kunz; and grandchildren Alexander Lee Coronell, Tony Kunz, Angelica Tapp, Carl Liberty Jr. and Edward Scharen as well as four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers include Arthur Martin, Frank Coronell, Ben Coronell, Jorden Coronell, Naahaan, Val Peterson and Reggie Peterson. Honorary pallbearers include ANB Grand Camp President Richard Jackson, ANB Ex. Committee Member Willard Jackson, Harvey Marvin, Ernie Hillman, Ben Didrickson, Harold Jacobs and Andy Gamble.
A Russian Orthodox Service will be held at 6 p.m. today at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall. Rev. Simeon, Pastor Richard Green and Rev. Jerry Bennett will officiate the service.
