Accounting firms merge
Mikunda, Cottrell & Co., the largest firm of certified public accountants in Alaska that is owned by state residents, has made its third acquisition in 16 months.
Mikunda, Cottrell has merged with longtime Anchorage accounting firm Bigler & Duff, following a merger with Whitlock, Carlson & Co., an Anchorage competitor, and the acquisition of Allen Bingham, who became a partner after 25 years with international accounting firms.
The latest merger was prompted by the pending retirement of Riley L. Bigler, "a pioneer in modern public accountancy in Alaska," according to David Cottrell, the managing partner of the acquiring firm. Bigler's partner, Shelda J. Duff, has become a senior tax manager with Mikunda, Cottrell.
"The merger follows an Alaska trend toward consolidation as senior members of the profession retire and seek ways to provide continued service to their clients," Cottrell said in a news release. "The public accounting field in Alaska has also been changed in recent years by continuing growth of Alaska-owned firms and the departure of national firms with offices here."
Mikunda, Cottrell has offices in Anchorage, Kenai, Seward and Bethel.
China seminar in Anchorage
The state Division of Trade and Development and the Alaska World Affairs Council are conducting a seminar, "Alaska's Emerging Trade Opportunities with China," Friday at the Anchorage Hilton Hotel.
"China has become one of Alaska's top trading partners in the past few years and represents an important opportunity for Alaska export diversification in Asia," said Greg Wolf, director of the state division.
The keynote speaker at the seminar will be Joseph Borich, executive director of the Washington State China Relations Council and a former U.S. Foreign Service officer. SuperStation touts Neilsens
Recent survey results show that the ABC/Alaska SuperStation is the most watched station in Southeast.
The November "sweeps" conducted by Nielsen Media Research showed ABC's dominance in key time periods.
For example, from 6 to 9 a.m. weekdays, a period that includes the network's "Good Morning America," the SuperStation had a Nielsen audience share of 17 percent, compared to KING, Seattle's NBC affiliate, 10 percent; KIRO, Seattle's CBS affiliate, 5; and Juneau public station KTOO, 4.
As always, "ABC Monday Night Football" was dominant in its time slot, with a 37 percent share.
The Juneau Designated Market Area includes 26 zip codes from Prince of Wales Island to Yakutat.
