Art demonstrations at City Museum
The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will host events at the museum the next two Saturday afternoons. The first is part of the museum's monthly "First Saturdays" program, which always features free admission.
On Jan. 6, Juneau-Douglas High School art students will demonstrate art activities and discuss the art work currently on display at the museum, the 2nd annual Juneau-Douglas High School Art Show. Demonstrations and activity will run from noon to 3 p.m. The art show includes drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics and is on display through Jan. 27.
Featuring the work of students in Jan Neimeyer and Tom Manning's art classes, the work ranges from pieces by freshmen in entry-level classes to the works of 10 seniors taking advanced studio classes.
On Saturday, Jan. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m., the museum is hosting "Fun with straws," a class taught by Jeff Brown. Brown will introduce students to straws in a variety of activities: making straw stars, weaving straws, silly stunts, magic tricks and more.
The class is for youth 10 and older, and each student will make a straw star two feet in diameter. Pre-registration is required. There's an $11.55 fee, which includes sales tax and materials. For more information on Art Classes at the City Museum, and to register, please call 586-3572.
The Juneau-Douglas City Museum is located at 4th and Main Street and is a program of the Juneau Parks and Recreation Department.

Creekside Park Elementary School has been remodeled and Judges are looking for art that would excite people entering the school. It would be painted or installed on a major exterior concrete wall or an interior front hallway. The deadline for submission is Jan. 16.
Scenic Park Elementary School is also budgeted for art that greets visitors and students approaching and entering the school. The deadline is Jan. 30. For site descriptions and further information, contact Public Art Curator Jocelyn Young at (907) 343-6473.
