Like Logan Spencer, I used to have a problem pledging allegiance to a flag which seemed to represent a viewpoint about America which wasn't mine.
I was his age when the involvement in Vietnam was intensifying. Bumper stickers like "My Country, Right or Wrong" and "Love it or Leave it" with pictures of the flag made me feel like the flag had been taken over by an intolerant part of society.
My solution to this dilemma was to pledge allegiance to the Constitution. In this way, I can demonstrate my great love for this country (to those who seem to need me to demonstrate it visually) without compromising my belief that sometimes my country behaves contrary to its own ideals.
What makes me so proud of this great country is that incredible document the Constitution of the United States. The more we are mindful of all it represents the better we will be as a nation.
