A progressive stance on Pledge of Allegiance

Letter to the editor

Round of applause for Logan Spencer. I was raised in a very strict American-based Christian religion, and I mindlessly repeated the "under God" Pledge of Allegiance in my predominantly white, rich and Republican Barbie and Ken Californian town through my entire high school years. It took me until the age of 25 to reach the same ideas that you have come to and, knowing the way Christians usually behave themselves to such letters to the editor, I wanted you to receive a round of applause from at least one person.

It sounds like you are a natural-born whiz at international relations and philosophy. I hope that your studies take you in that direction. I am currently living in Europe - last year in Madrid and this year in Germany, in the city of Tuebingen - as a foreign exchange student and you would never want to imagine the ruckus that would go down in Europe if you tried to endorse anything religious at a school. France and Germany in the last two months have been knee-deep in negotiations on the wearing of religious symbols, and France luckily passing a judgment.

Mr. Spencer, your comments are very much in line with the way the rest of the progressive world thinks and I have to say that a tear wells up in my eye to know that some kids out there discover what it took me 25 years to know. Stand up to your teachers with respect, don't give in and understand that it will most likely take 10 years for others to arrive where you currently stand. Yeah, one for the good guys!
